On November 18, 1985, Joe Theismann’s life changed forever when Lawrence Taylor came in through the blind side and ended his football career on the spot. Taylor at the time, was considered to be the best defensive linemen in the game. He sacked the hall of famer at RFK stadium in Washington DC, heard a pop, called for the medical staff, and watched as Joe Theismann left the field for the last time in a Washington Redskins uniform.
Thirty-three years later, the best in the game goes by the name JJ Watt, and exactly 33 years to the day, the best sack artist in the game once again took down a Washington quarterback in what should have been a career ender. The team had moved from the inner city to FedEx field in Landover, Maryland. However, escaping the city did not help them escape the curse of the Washington QB. On November 18, 2018, JJ Watt rushed past the Washington offensive line and took down Alex Smith, obliterating his right leg. The 33 year old former first overall pick was carted off the field after what people thought would be his final football game. The crazy thing is that it wasn’t. Do not play this video if you’re squeamish. If you’re squeamish but want to listen to Scott Hanson’s beautiful voice, close your eyes after pressing play.
It looked like it was over for Alex. I won’t show you what his leg looked like during recovery. Ok, I will. If you wanna see it, scroll down to the bottom of the page. If not, close your eyes after the last word of the article. Anyway, it looked over, and it would’ve been for anyone else, but Alex Smith is simply built different.
He went through a speedy, eighteen month recovery from a broken fibula and tibula in his right leg. He came back to competitive football on November 8th 2020, just about two years after it happened. If you were watching that game, you know that every ounce of attention was given to Alex Smith. If the camera wasn’t on him, it was on his wife. If it wasn’t on his wife, it was flashing back to either the injury or pictures of his recovery. They didn’t give a hint of camera time to Daniel Jones and the Giants who went on to actually win the game.
Obviously when you give someone a bunch of camera time, everyone else gets jealous. And that’s exactly what happened this Monday night when the Football Team went into Pittsburgh. The announcers would not stop talking about the incredible right leg of Alex Smith and how it came back from the dead. You would think they belonged to the church of Alex Smith’s right leg.
Understandably, Alex Smith’s left leg did not take kindly to all of this attention. It hadn’t been happy in a long time, and finally decided to show it. You probably know the rest if you looked at the picture on the top of the page. It just started bleeding a little bit, which honestly did not help whatsoever. Everyone just thought it was the right leg and they thought more about how amazing Alex Smith is for coming back. Here’s the picture of the leg recovering by the way. It’s super gross.
