By The Chief
The Chiefs and Broncos were playing Sunday night at Arrowhead stadium when something more or less bizarre happened. In the first half of the game, the play that would have been the first TD for the Chiefs consisted of a long pass from gunslinger Patrick Mahomes to speedster Tyreek Hill. The two have a long history of doing the football dance, so it was pretty standard to see the long pass go up and the camera move 50 yards downfield to the quick receiver. Hill went to the ground while the ball seemingly went through his hands, hitting the turf on top of the I in Chiefs. At least, that’s what it looked like at first.
As you can see in the picture just above, the ball trapped itself in between his shoulder, helmet and forearm. It never travelled below this plane, and therefore was a catch. There were a few issues with this play though. One of the major issues was that the refs originally called it an incomplete pass, the second biggest was the fact that Hill did not realize he made the catch, and the massive, overwhelming problem with this play is that Andy Reid did not realize that the refs were asking if he would like to challenge the play. We had a reporter on the sideline who was able to document this entire conversation.
Ref: “Hey Andy, that looked like a possible TD. You wanna challenge it?”
Andy: “Ugh, you people again. I swear to god if you try to sell me another encyclopedia set, I’m gonna lose it.”
Ref: “What? I’m asking if you want to challenge the call on the field. I think he could’ve caught it but we can’t review it unless you throw the flag.”
Andy: “For the last time, I don’t want any of your damned encyclopedias.”
Ref: “Alright, alright. I get it.”
Ref 2: “What’d he say?”
Ref: “I don’t know man. Let’s just keep going. Fourth down.”
Reid called out his punt team on the next play, basically saying no to 6 points for the first time in NFL history. It would seem that this was due to a deep rooted hatred for encyclopedias and/or encyclopedia salesmen. It didn’t make a big difference, as the Chiefs went on to win the game by like 3 or something.
