In case you haven’t heard, on the 28th of July in his first appearance against the Astros, Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly threw two fastballs behind the heads of Astros stars Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa. On Wednesday it was announced that he was to be suspended 8 games, which in a regular season would actually be equal to a 22 game ban. For further context, Astros players have been suspended a total of 0 games while a former player who recently retired and will likely end up in Cooperstown was blackballed from the league.
It didn’t sit well with us that Kelly would just throw at the two Astros like that. He wasn’t even on the Dodgers when they last beat them in the world series. In fact, Kelly was part of a Red Sox team that had its own sign stealing debacle. We talked to him to try and figure out what got him to go for blood.
“Yeah I’m mad that this whole sign stealing thing happened. I’m not mad that they did it though. I don’t care if you cheat. Everyone cheats. I’m mad that they got caught. Ever since we figured out that they’ve been stealing signs, we’ve been forced to change our signs like 3 times a day. I can’t even keep track of one change a week. And in the last change, we switched the fastball sign with the knock their head off sign. I guess I didn’t get the memo. Will must have thought it just got away from me, cuz he gave it to me again. But once we figured out the problem, Commissioner Incopetent himself started drawing up the punishment paperwork. Not my fault. See you guys in two weeks.”
So obviously it wasn’t actually Joe’s fault. Just another example of the plethora or issues up on top of the MLB.
